Dear Ms. Hannafey:

Enclosed is a check to Regis High School in the amount of $22, 039.47. This represents the final distribution of funds from the Paul J. Battaglia Memorial Fund, and will mark the dissolution of the fund.

Paul was a member of the class of 96. So much of what Paul was, and so much of his experience at Regis was reflected in his contributions to The Owl. As the opportunities offered to him by The Owl were so central to his growth and development at Regis, it is our hope that a large part of these funds can be used to benefit The Owl in some way, so that other Regians can have the same opportunity for growth.

We were happy to hear of the placement of the plaque commemorating the Regians lost on 9/11. Please let us know when the dedication ceremony will be.

Sincerely,

Elaine Z. Leinung
Chair

Softball Game/Fundraiser at Binghamton --

We received the following letter from Adam Schecter at WHRW. Proceeds from the softball game would benefit Binghamton University's Paul J. Battaglia Scholarship (a separate scholarship fund from the Paul J. Battaglia Memorial Fund), which is awarded to a Binghamton University student. The Leinungs anticipate attendig the game. We post the info here for those interested:

To the Leinung Family,
My name is Adam Schechter and I worked with Paul at WHRW for the two years he was General Manager. Right now I am putting together a charity softball game to benefit the scholarship fund. The Paul J. Battaglia Memorial Classic is scheduled for May 9th at 5pm on the varsity softball field on the Binghamton University campus. The WHRW team is facing off against the new pop music station, Wild 104 and we're hoping to make this a big event. I felt like planning this game could be a way for me to give back and help out with the fund and keeping Paul's memory alive at the station. Right now, I wanted to take this opportunity to invite Paul's family and friends to the game and help spread the word by putting it on the websites that are giving out his latest information. Perhaps, if you would like, we could surely arrange to have one of his family members throw out the first pitch. If there is anything else that I can do to help, please let me know. I look forward to speaking with you about this project in the near future.

E-mail from Corey Fehnel --
Hello Mr. Leinung,
My name is Corey Fehnel and I am a friend of Paul's from Binghamton. I spent this past summer pedaling a bicycle across the country as a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity. I thought of Paul often during the journey, and carried an american flag in tribute when I crossed the golden gate bridge (our final destination after 64 days of riding). I thought you and your family might like to have the picture. I wish you and your family all the best.
Sincerely yours,
Corey Fehnel.

Scholarship Presented. On Sunday, 6/23, the Board of Directors presented Ryan Huber with a check as the first recipient of the Paul J. Battaglia Memorial Scholarship at a dinner held at Lundy’s Resturaunt in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. The Board of Directors was very impressed by recomendations it received from the Regis faculty regarding Ryan's character and spirit. We wish Ryan the greatest success in his college career and in life.

The Paul J. Battaglia Memorial Scholarship Fund was started by Paul’s Mother, Elaine Z. Leinung, and step-father, John M. Leinung, with the help of Paul's fiancé and friends, to honor the memory of Paul J. Battaglia, a victim of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The fund will award one or more scholarships annually to a graduating high school senior(s) who the board feel exemplify the same qualities of caring, fellowship, humor, and leadership that Paul exhibited. However, the scholarship fund in Paul's memory at Binghamton University is still, and will remain, active. You may contribute to this fund directly.
